From the Farm : Transitional Cotton

Courtney Wagner, Loomstate's new Production Manager fills us in on her recent sourcing trip, visiting organic and transitional cotton farms in West Texas...

"Last month members of the Loomstate team visited Lubbock, Texas, where 95% of our country’s organic cotton is grown! We are interested in supporting USA grown organic and transitional cotton farms, so we took some time out of the office to connect with the farmers and see what partnerships would make sense for our upcoming projects.

It takes three solid years of organic cultivation for a conventional farm to be deemed organic. During this time, the crop is called "transitional cotton," as it's grown organically, but cannot officially be certified organic. There is little demand for transitional cotton, since it comes at a higher price point than conventional, but without the "organic" marketing value. So, we are interested in working with and supporting farmers during this three year period, as they responsibly shift their farming practices.

We had the opportunity to visit a number of organic and transitional farms in Texas and interact with partners of the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative (TOCMC). It's important for us to visit the farms to get a better understanding of the farming cycle/processes and the challenges that the farmers face. These challenges can influence timing, quantity and quality where it relates to production. Also, it connects us to the crop and each step of the production process, from farm all the way to the finished garment.

We know that the only way to encourage the organic cotton supply in the US is to support the transition from conventional to organic. It’s important that we support and find uses for this three year phase."
