Audubon, More Like Auducool

When you think Audubon Society, a sweet older environmental couple might comes to mind. They have matching zip-off hiking trousers, bucket caps, and binoculars around the neck.  Well, this is what we expected when we joined NYC Audubon for a hawk walk in Fort Tilden, NY. But when we met the other bird watchers we realized Audubon is achangin'. Others rolled in from Brooklyn, one on motorcycle, a creative couple from Williamsburg, a tee-pee maker, all young and dressed real cool....on a bird watch.

We followed group leader Tara on a meandering path that lead us atop a secret fortress where we got the best view in New York (a little different than the view from the Empire State Building). We spotted a few birds darting by, but the best part was chatting with the fellow bird watchers. The conversation migrated from birds to water quality to offshore pipelines and NY fracking, which made sense since the health of our bird community is linked to the health of every other aspect of the environment....after all, it's all connected. We look forward to spending more time with this hip and environmentally-aware group.

Upcoming New York City Audubon events.
