Carpet & Home Launch an Eco Shop
by Lindsay Talbot
ABC Carpet & Home’s Union Square emporium is an ever-growing wonderland of eclectic treasures, and this month it welcomes a new wing: a highly curated selection of sustainable, eco-friendly clothing and accessories called Embody, which is anchored by the winners of the 2012 CFDA/Lexus Eco-Design Challenge. Nestled above the salvaged barn doors of ABC Kitchen, the loft is festooned with glittering chandeliers like the rest of the warehouse—part bazaar-like souk with its scatterings of Guatemalan caftans and Tunisian pillows, and part sylvan forest with canopies of knotty driftwood. In one corner, you’ll find Urban Zen Collection’s slinky cowl-neck jerseys and basket-weave bags displayed alongside tea-leaf vases and stacks of books on Haiti; tucked in another, a glass case of Pamela Love pendants, organic cotton djebellas, and racks of reversible and rotatable Loomstate 321 sheaths. Libertine’s deconstructed coats mingle with Pendleton capes and Margiela slipdresses that have been trawled from vintage boutiques and consignment shops, while fringed shawls by Ryan Roche(whose collections are handmade between Long Island City and a cooperative of widows in Nepal) hang next to VPL zigzag stitched camis. And the best may be yet to come: During fashion week in February, they’ll be adding a new slew of designers like Suno, Pero, and Araks.
