Rogan Gregory and Scott Mackinlay Hahn of Loomstate are making waves in the eco-friendly fashion world (and beyond!) with their recently launched line called Loomstate 321. The tightly-curated, color-blocked offering is made entirely in the U.S. of A. and nothing is over $228. Did we mention Winona Ryder made a PA at 321's Treasure & Bond debut last week? Major!
Rogan, what's the idea behind Loomstate 321?
321 focuses on the concept of one fabric, seven styles. The versatility and the ability to reverse everything is the real hook. I tried to simplify the entire line to challenge myself as a designer. I wanted to see what I could do with only one fabric.
What fabric are you using?
The fabric is called Tencel, which is made from a wood pulp. It's 100 percent natural and biodegradable. It essentially ends up similar to rayon, but while making Tencel, we're able to recapture 99 percent of the chemicals and solvents used in the process. It's a good alternative to organic cotton. As a designer, it gives me more flexibility since the texture is smoother and more feminine.
What's the significance behind the number 321?
It stands for three ways to wear one piece.
What's the reaction been like so far?
I thought of this as a random idea, but people who are high-minded really appreciate the sophistication of the idea. People, like my mom or my scientist sister, also just like it because it's super functional. It makes everyone happy.
You just launched last week in celebration of Earth Day. How do you typically like to celebrate Earth Month?
I have a garden at my house in Montauk, so I love to celebrate by surfing and tending to my garden.
What's the least earth-minded thing about you?
It's not that bad, but it's something I'm told I'm not supposed to do. I'll be in the shower for half an hour. I really like a lot of water pressure, and I like to take long showers. It's just the way it is. It's the one time nobody is going to bother me. I can totally chill out and get the humidity going. It's my thing.
If someone told you to "act natural," what's the first thing you would do?
Cook at home. I order food a lot, and there's so much plastic. It's a pet peeve of mine. I really don't know what to do with it or what is recyclable.
Who's your favorite hippie?
You know who I really like? Willie Nelson. Hippies can sometimes be closed-minded, but he's a hippie and smokes grass and understands that everyone doesn't need to behave the way you behave. He understands America and what makes it great.
Ok, back to Loomstate 321. What can we expect for next season?
For Fall, we used one additional fabric: a textured Tencel. We use the same concept but add in some new pieces, like a maxi skirt, and really rich earth tones. You're going to love it!
